We all get different things out of our music.
No one is right, or wrong. When it comes down to it no one has the right to say 'that is good music' and 'that is bad'. All anyone can say is 'I like this' and 'I don't like that'.
Never the
less, as a general rule people like to hear a reasonable amount of predictable repetition in music so they get the feeling they know what is coming next. They also like a bit of unpredictability
to add colour and interest. If you go too far away from this balance the people listening to your music will think it is not musical (unless they hear it enough to identify the predictable
repetition in it).
All the musicians I know agree that you learn heaps from playing with other people. This is really important for your musical development. But even when you are
playing regularly with others, you will find you can still learn more from theory and take it into your playing.
This part of the site
is a collection of ideas on how to push yourself along a bit if that's what you have decided to do. We hope it will help you with your music and help you get the most out of any music teachers you choose to take lessons from.
